ETSY SHOP SHOWCASE: CLARISSA CALLESEN
by LATONYA SHAW

One of the most interesting and odd shops I’ve found on ETSY is Clarissa Callesen Creator of Strange & Wonderful Things . This shop has the feel of magic and long lost fantasy worlds. The only difference is that these fantasy worlds escaped Hell and linger about in a state of infinite punishment. Mildly grotesque or rather a cute grotesque “ish” style permeates the found art objects. See for yourself. How does this shop make you feel as you look at each creation. Where does it take you? The creations seem to hold a unique story that’s a prison of time and experience.

Shop Details: CLARISSA CALLESEN
ETSY SHOP DESCRIPTION:
Some where along the line I became a collector of odd and useless things. I am drawn to objects that have a past, a story to tell, like pieces of rusty metal along a roadside, a seashell corroded by the salt water, or a discarded letter found in a musty box. I can spend hours conjuring the stories of unknown people in discarded photographs on antique stores shelves. These are my chosen materials, my inspiration for creating.
Many years ago I fell in love with folk art, Mexican in particular, and then later cajun/vodou altars and folk art. One of the most important components in folk art is the use of “junk” or “garbage” as a medium for creating. In that process the artist raises the status of the mundane, ordinary, throw away object from mundane to divine. I strive to follow in that tradition.
So I gathered up my strange collection of things, my ecclectic spiritual leanings, my love of folk art, a sprinkle of feminism, and a dash of alchemy to create the pieces you see here. I hope you enjoy.
I am open to discussing commission pieces using specific images and objects that have a history or importance to you.

WATCH PARTS IN RESIN – STEAMPUNK NECKLACE

Steampunk Necklace Watchparts In Resin

STEAMPUNK RESIN NECKLACE IS SIMPLE AND ELEGANT
by LATONYA SHAW

I always have time for a steampunk necklace. What I normally don’t have time for is most of the resin creations out there. Pouring equal parts does not count as technique. This piece did however catch my eye. Far as I can tell the back of the pendant is not flat indicating what I call “ice tray” resin jewelry. The small watch parts keep the piece true to the steampunk genre and look as if a multiple pour process was applied to give the pieces layers and depth. The winner is the wire wrapping. I like that it has a found object feel to it because the wiring borders on what a paper clip would look like unfolded. Bottom line it’s a decent pendant if you want a steampunk necklace that’s a bit on the found object side.

STEAMPUNK FOUND OBJECTS ASSEMBLAGE

“HE APPEARS AGAIN” STEAMPUNK FOUND OBJECT ASSEMBLAGE
by LATONYA SHAW

The domed glass on this piece gives you the feeling you can peek into another world or place in time.

Description:
He Appears Again
This is an assemblage created with odd found objects. Behind the domed glass lens is a little world with a tiny tree (made from a dried cabbage root). The glass window lens is edged with words clipped from an old salvaged book. I added a little bird, tiny light bulbs and chains, and a spiked orb hangs from the bottom. The length is 16 inches and 6.5 at its widest .It hangs from the chain on the top for easy display.

FOUND OBJECT JEWELRY NECKLACE TAKES YOU BACK IN TIME

Found Object Jewelry Conquistador Spanish Explorer Necklace
by LATONYA SHAW

The artist describes this necklace best I will include the exact item description provided. It details items used and the thinking that went into the creation of the necklace. This is an area of high interest to me and hopefully will have something to share with you soon that I’ve created. For now this found object necklace takes the stage and is putting a great show.

Description By Artist:

A mixed media necklace made from found objects – an old keyhole escutcheon and a vintage coin commemorating the Spanish conquistador and explorer, Vasco Nunez Balboa.

I stamped a pattern on the old escutcheon and layered a verdigris filigree piece and the coin over it. A strip of heavy weight art paper in deep red adds a bit of contrast, and a tiny vintage compass encased in filigree hangs below. An antique style cross decorates the backside of the pendant, and makes this piece reversible.

The pendant hangs from a textured silver plated 18″ chain via another filigree piece. The length of the pendant, including the compass, is 2 1/2″.
As with all my found object jewelry, this is a one of a kind piece that you certainly won’t see anyone else wearing!

RUSTY AROUND THE EDGES FOUND OBJECT SCULTURE

Found Object Mixed Media Sculpture Art

THE MAGIC WITHIN FOUND OBJECTS
by LATONYA SHAW

While searching for the next found art sculpture on ETSY, this immediately caught my attention. My first thought, Edward Scissor Hands, but I began to look deeper into the construction. The way objects are connected to each other bring about multiple stories and experiences. Although it’s obviously a very sharp sculpture with pointy ends, it’s not cold and heartless. In fact it has a harmless and inviting feel to it despite the frowning face.

After reading the description the designer says this project was just for fun to play with found objects. Looking at the end result I actually get the sense mission was accomplished. She also noted that there were an assortment of found objects that went into the making of “Rusty Around The Edges”. Things like circuit boards, jewelry, saw blades, a hubcap, even driftwood.

In closure I’d liked to state this found object piece is something unique and fun with a good amount of technique to turn junk into art.

PROGNOSIS INOPERABLE -Altered Found Art Assemblage

Found Art Assembled Sculture

PROGNOSIS INOPERABLE FOUND ART SCULPTURE
by LATONYA SHAW

This sculpture has the traditional Steampunk gear decorations I’ve come to love so much. As I stare, think and dream upon this piece Steampunk is the last thing to come to mind unfortunately. This is gothic, morbid symbolism, and twisted. From the discarded objects used to make this sculpture it’s clear the objects did not escape their fate. They remain discarded and frozen with agony. I can connect with this because it’s impossible to conjure up any form of fantasy from this sculpture, it has reality. I just so happen to appreciate reality in all it’s forms.

FOUND ART RESIN NECKLACE INSPIRED BY CREEPY DOLLS
by LATONYA SHAW

A Rosary necklace like no other. I found this beauty on ETSY, the mother lode of found art. According to what the artist wrote in the description this piece was inspired by her children’s love of creepy dolls. She also confessed a love for creepy dolls and has produced a unique resin doll head pendant. I will leave the link to this item below.

MY FIRST ATTEMPT AT FOUND ART
by LATONYA SHAW

Since this was my first go at found art I decided to keep the title very simple, CIRCUIT BOARD SCULPTURE. I hope it conjures something fantastic and technical in your mind. I also wanted to start this blog because of all the great genuine and beautiful found artwork out there. This blog is dedicated to bringing to light artists who find form in chaos and bring back to life what was thrown away or lost. To me found art is created by hope, opportunity, and chance. It’s very nature is the stuff dreams are made of.
